Learning about the history of the United States is easy when you take a trip to Washington DC. There are plenty of hotels from which to choose for your stay. You may want to decide what activities you wish to do first so you can pick one of the boutique hotels DC has that's in the right area. Where you stay is an important part of any trip. There is enough to do in Washington DC that you might stay for several days. You can easily compare all of the boutique hotels DC has by doing an online search. When you look at the options in this way, you can compare prices, locations and services within a matter of minutes. Any of the boutique hotels DC offers will be comfortable and high quality. It is just a matter of finding the one that best fits your needs.

It is good to know you will have help at the hotel of your choice. You may still want to make a list of things you want to see before you arrive in the area. It might be a good idea to take a tour of the city from a licensed guide. The tour called "Walk of the Town" is a memorable tour that can help you see some of the most popular areas in the city. These tours are free and are a great way to learn more about the attractions than you would on your own.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is one of the must-see attractions. You can look at touching photos, letters, flowers and other items that have been left in remembrance of people who never came home from the war. The long wall holds many names of soldiers that gave their lives and the area should be treated in a solemn manner with quiet respect.

There are many other statues, memorials and monuments in the city. The Washington Monument is a 555-foot high obelisk that you can view from the ground. Once you have walked all the way around the monument, you may want to take the elevator to the observation deck to see Washington DC from above.

If you want to see more presidential monuments, the Lincoln Memorial is one of the most popular monuments to visit. You can look at the looming statue of President Lincoln and then simply turn around to see the Grand Mall in its breathtaking setting. The national mall has wonderful trees, beautiful fountains, plenty of gardens and many monuments that take up two miles connecting the Capitol building to the Lincoln statue. From this area, it is just a short walk to the Korean War Memorial. When you visit this site, you will feel as if you are right on the battlefield.

Another popular destination is the location of Lincoln's assassination, Ford's Theater. It is fascinating to see the live performances that occasionally take place on the stage in the theater. You can also visit the museum and take a tour of the building. The attraction can feel very ominous as you take into account what happened in that very location.

Most visitors will want to at least walk past the White House during their time in the city. Tours are possible, but it can sometimes be difficult to get a look inside the house. By walking by the area, you can get a feel for its size and magnitude. It is really enlightening to see the building in person after seeing it on TV for many years.

The US Capitol is another popular stop for tourists. You will need a ticket to tour the Capitol, but the building is open to the public every day of the week except Sunday. You may want to reserve your space online in advance just to be sure there will be room for you on the day that you want to see the building. If you want to get more of a taste for government, you can tour the Supreme Court for free on Capitol Hill. Tours of the Pentagon are also available, but these must be arranged in advance and can be difficult to obtain.

Washington DC is the most important city in the nation in terms of politics. It holds a vast amount of history and an endless number of attractions. This is one travel destination that can keep tourists busy for every hour of their visit.
